Sargent Shriver was a brilliant public executive who touched the lives of millions of people, here in America and around the world. Sarge was the driving force behind the creation of the Peace Corps, VISTA, Head Start and so many other core American programs that proudly call us to public service. He personified the optimistic spirit of an era and showed us by his example how to turn vision and commitment into action for others. He was effective, efficient and determined -- always mission-oriented, demanding achievement and results, but with a special warmth and an abiding faith. Sarge personally inspired me to find my true home, in West Virginia, and was one of the greatest people I ever had the privilege to work with. Sharon and I join a grateful nation in mourning Sarge's passing -- he will be profoundly missed by all of us who valued his idealism and vision.
