Today is the 16th anniversary of the September 11 attacks and has been designated a National Day of Service and Remembrance. We remember the lives lost on this day in 2001, and we honor all of those who responded to the violence and destruction by serving others in need. The quote we have chosen this week, taken from Sarge's Speech at the National Conference of Returned Peace Corps Volunteers and Staff, is a quintessentially Shriveresque expression of the material, emotional, and spiritual importance of service.
Let us remember today and every day that there are people all around us who could use our support. They may be members of our family or our community, or victims of natural disaster, conflict, or misfortune miles away. Either way, there is always something we each can do to provide relief, comfort, and support to someone in need.
