Sargent Shriver on how to Address Injustice (September 7, 1972)

During his Vice Presidential Campaign in 1972, Sargent Shriver was interviewed by Phil Donahue in front of a live audience in Dayton, Ohio. He spent much of the interview describing and defending the record of his Presidential running mate, George McGovern. When asked to talk about his own ideas, he immediately turned to the subject of justice. In this clip, he describes how he would handle justice in the US, including his idea of reimagining the Department of Justice into a body whose role it is NOT to enforce law and order or reduce crime, but rather to eradicate injustice.

Peace requires the simple but powerful recognition that what we have in common as human beings is more important and crucial than what divides us.
