Speech at the Take Back Pac Reception

"I know that everyone here is not afraid to get out and meet with the voters and make our case. With financial backing, worthy candidates, and great grassroots workers, we will return District 15 to the Democrats!"

Thank you for inviting Eunice and me to join you tonight as we all begin the work to return the 15th District to Democratic Control. I especially want to thank our friend, Tufail, for opening his lovely home, and throwing such a terrific party.

We are here tonight for two reasons:

First, because our son, Mark, unfortunately cannot be here, as the sole Democrat currently elected in District 15, he very much wanted to be with you this evening. Unfortunately, Mark had a long-standing commitment on Capitol Hill that, despite his best efforts, could not be changed. He hopes to stop by later, but asked me to say a few words before he arrives. Even though Mark cannot be here in person I can assure you that he is here in spirit. In fact, I have a check here for $1,000 from Mark to support the effort!

The second reason that we wanted to attend is because Eunice and I both live in District 15, and nothing would make us happier (other than seeing Mark elected to Congress) than to have a Democratic sweep in District 15!

And for that reason, I have here a gift from the both of us to support the effort as well!!! But, as everyone here knows, it is going to take a lot more than just financial resources to return Democratic control to Western Montgomery County.

It is going to take great candidates. And with people like Rob Garagio running for State Senate and our terrific candidates for the House of Delegates, we’ve got great candidates.

It’s going to take grassroots support. And from the conversations I’ve had with people here tonight, I know that everyone here is not afraid to get out and meet with the voters and make our case. With financial backing, worthy candidates, and great grassroots workers, we will return District 15 to the Democrats!!!

I know that Mark is looking forward to working with all of you toward that goal, and ensuring that Eunice and I and everyone from District 15 are represented by Democrats in the State House, the State Senate and the United States Congress!

Peace requires the simple but powerful recognition that what we have in common as human beings is more important and crucial than what divides us.
