Sargent Shriver was truly a man for all seasons -- soldier, diplomat, scholar, humanitarian, and public servant. Few individuals can claim to have positively impacted the lives of millions of people, but Sargent Shriver can. His leadership of the Peace Corps, Special Olympics, and Head Start -- to name just a few of his varied activities -- represents a lasting legacy.
Sargent Shriver always answered his country's call to duty, from enlisting in the Navy during World War II to serving as ambassador to France to advancing world peace across the globe. He earned the nation's highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He was also an exemplary husband, father, and grandfather in one of the nation's highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He was also an exemplary husband, father, and grandfather in one of the nation's most storied families.
His was an amazing life, well lead, and in service to others. While we mourn with his family and friends, we also celebrate the tremendous life of a great American.
